Book Review – Skyview: Lord of the Wills by M. Sheehan

Right from the first page, I knew Skyview was going to be epic. The story starts with meeting our hero William Ward, an employee who works at the family business, the Interlaken Beer Company (IBC). William’s bloodline dates back to the original Ward, one of the IBC’s founding members.
After a work party, William discovers that there is a fortune, his ancestor’s share of the IBC He embarks on a quest to trace his ancestor’s movements through history and find the treasure of his inheritance. Not only that, but he is also leading new friends, the descendants of the other founding members, who try to support William to find the treasure.
This is certainly an amazing concept, as readers will find themselves immersed in William’s epic quest as they use futuristic technology to delve into the events of the 1300s. Skyview also has a stunning global scope with breathtaking scenery.
You really feel the time pressure of the book, too, when you discover William and his friends aren’t the only ones searching for treasure – there are other descendants from the original founders who want the fortune for themselves, no matter what the cost. Pretty soon William realises he has gotten caught up in a centuries’ old fight.
The writing style is excellent – one of Sheehan’s greatest strengths is how he has skilfully blended such an epic, historical fantasy with the snappy, engaging power of a contemporary thriller, including car chases!
The only criticism I’d have of Skyview – which is why it’s not quite getting the whole 5 stars – is that at times it moves so fast, with so many references to the different descendent leagues or different historical events, it can be quite hard to follow. Also, perhaps William’s team spend so much time discussing the history of the 1300s that there isn’t quite as much character development as there could be, but this is understandable given the scope of the book. This in no way detracted me from enjoying the book, however, as I really enjoyed the concept and the author’s clear and engaging style meant even if I lost the trail a bit with the names, I could still follow what was got the larger picture of what was going on.
One of the other wonderful things about Skyview is the depths of research, not just contained to the relevant historical events in the 1300s, but also there are delicious anecdotes one of the group just drips into the dialogue, especially when the party are travelling. I often felt as I was having a world tour with William and soaking up all of the historical details for myself. I really admire the author for the rich texture of history that I imagine took years of research.
So, if you are looking for a fantastic blend between an epic historical fantasy with the global scope and punchy feel of James Bond, I’d recommend you read this Skyview! I really enjoyed it.
