I’m doing NaNoWriMo 2023!
Hi everyone, today I thought I’d tell you a bit more about my NaNoWriMo 2023 project. If you’re unfamiliar, NaNoWriMo (Nano for short) is an annual writing competition. Writers challenge themselves to write about 1600 words every day throughout November, with the goal of having a 50k novel by the end of the month. You can find out more info about the challenge here.
This is my 6th year of doing NaNoWriMo and I’ve been excited to get started today! My head has been in my historical fiction series a lot this year, whether it’s been releasing my third novel, editing my fourth or drafting my fifth. This has been great, but it’s going to be fun to write something completely different! Here’s what I’m working on this year:
My NaNoWriMo Project
This year, I’m writing a mystery, set on holiday/vacation in Tenerife in 1986. My main characters, Rachel and Dom, are a married couple on holiday to Tenerife, where they meet a frightened woman at their hotel. After some of their belongings get stolen, they start to wonder about the strange encounter with the woman and what scared her so much.
Soon, Rachel and Dom are suspicious of almost every other character at the exclusive hotel. They start to wonder if they are really safe, or whether their holiday can be rescued if they find the identity of the thief.
This will be an exciting project to write. It’s kind of contemporary ish, as even though 1986 was a while ago now, I don’t think it’s been long enough to count as historical fiction! My husband and I enjoyed a lovely holiday in Tenerife in 2018 (thankfully without any mysteries or theft) so I decided to set the story there. While some of it is very loosely based on what happened to a friend of mine, the story is largely fictional.
